VYREX INTERACTIVE
Community

Community Manager / Public Relations

  • Contract
  • Remote
  • United States (Remote)
  • $15.16 to $30.00 per hour USD
  • Closes Oct 10, 2026

Own the Discord, the Steam hubs and our own forum for two space games built on our own engine, and get the players and the developers talking to each other properly.

About the studio

Vyrex Interactive is a small independent studio building its own engine and shipping games
on it. Galactic Prospectors is a 2D space mining and survival game with co-op, dedicated
servers, base building and Steam Workshop support. Starbreaker is the 3D title on the same
technology, with landable planets, ray tracing and a dedicated server of its own. Both run
on Windows and Linux. We also run our own community site and forum at
vyrexinteractive.com rather than renting one.

The team is small enough that you would talk to the people writing the code every week.
There is no marketing department to route things through and no agency between you and the
players.

About the role

We need someone to own the community end to end: the Discord, the Steam hubs and discussion
boards, the forum on our own site, the social accounts, and the flow of information between
players and the developers. Right now that work is done in gaps between builds, which means
players wait too long for answers and good feedback never makes it into a tracker.

This is a contract role, not a disguised full time job. You set your own hours, use your own
equipment, invoice us monthly, and decide how the work gets done. We care about the
deliverables landing on time.

What you would do

  • Run day to day moderation and conversation across Discord, the Steam community hubs, and the Vyrex forum.
  • Write and publish patch notes, Steam announcements, devlogs and event posts from developer notes.
  • Triage player reports into something the team can act on: reproducible bug reports, tagged feature requests, and a short weekly summary of what players are actually complaining about.
  • Plan and run community moments around releases: launch days, playtests, closed betas, Steam Next Fest and seasonal sales.
  • Build and keep relationships with streamers, YouTubers and content creators in the space sim and sandbox space. Send keys, handle embargoes, follow up.
  • Keep a public knowledge base current: how to host a dedicated server, how to use the Workshop, how to file a crash log.
  • Maintain the community calendar and the social posting schedule.
  • Recruit, brief and support volunteer moderators as the community grows.
  • Report monthly on what moved: sentiment, member counts, wishlist and review trends, and what you would change next.

Deliverables

Pay is tied to experience for the hourly base and to the following deliverables for the bonus
portion. Volumes are targets, not quotas, and get set with you at the start of each month.

  • Release campaigns. A full community plan shipped on the day each game update ships: announcement copy, patch notes, Discord and social rollout, and the first 48 hours of response handling.
  • Weekly cadence. At least three substantive posts a week across the owned channels, plus daily presence in Discord and the Steam hubs on weekdays.
  • Feedback pipeline. A weekly written digest to the team, and player reports filed as clean, reproducible tickets.
  • Creator partnerships. Creators contacted, briefed and live with coverage of a Vyrex title.
  • Knowledge base. Articles written or brought up to date each month, tracked in batches of 25.
  • Steam operations. Store event pages, announcement scheduling and festival submissions prepared and submitted before each deadline.
  • Monthly report. One written report per month covering metrics, sentiment and recommendations.

Term and hours

Independent contractor, 1099. Initial three or six month term, renewable by mutual agreement. Roughly
5 to 25 hours per week, scheduled by you, with overlap into US Mountain Time business hours
at least three days a week. Fourteen days written notice on either side.

Compensation

The disclosures below are given under the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.

Rate of pay. $15.16 to $30.00 per hour USD. Where an individual lands in that range
depends on years of community management experience, the size and type of communities
previously run, writing samples, and whether they bring existing creator relationships in
this genre.

Benefits. This is an independent contractor engagement, so Vyrex Interactive does not
provide health insurance, dental or vision coverage, a retirement plan, paid sick leave, paid
vacation, disability or life insurance, or any other employee benefit plan, and does not
withhold taxes. The contractor is responsible for their own taxes and insurance. What the
engagement does include:

  • Fully flexible and self scheduled hours, with no fixed shifts.
  • Payment on a monthly invoice, net 15 days.
  • Steam keys for every Vyrex Interactive title, plus reasonable keys for competitor research.
  • Studio accounts and tooling provided: Discord, Steamworks partner access at the level the work needs, and the site and forum administration tools.
  • A credit in the game credits and on the studio site.
  • Travel and pass costs covered for any event we ask you to attend, agreed in writing per event.
  • Payment for all accepted work in progress if either side ends the contract.

Application window. Applications are open now. The window is anticipated to close on
October 10th 2026. We review applications as they arrive and may close the posting earlier if
we fill the role, or extend it if we have not. Any change to the closing date will be posted
on this listing.

How to apply

Use the form below, or email [email protected]. Send a CV, two
writing samples (patch notes, an announcement post or a community update all beat a cover
letter), links to communities you have run with a sentence on the state they were in when
you arrived and when you left, and a short note on what you would change first about the
Vyrex community. We read every application ourselves and reply either way.

Equal opportunity and Colorado notices

Vyrex Interactive LLC does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, creed,
national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age,
disability, military or veteran status, marital status, genetic information, or any other
status protected by Colorado or federal law.

Consistent with the Colorado Job Application Fairness Act, we do not ask for your age, date
of birth, or dates of school attendance or graduation on the initial application. Do not
include them, and feel free to redact them from any document you send us. Consistent with the
Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, we do not ask for or rely on wage history, and you
will not be retaliated against for discussing pay.

Reasonable accommodations for the application process are available on request. Write to
[email protected] and say what you need.

What we need from you

  • 0-2 or more years (entry level/beginners welcome) running a game or software community, or documented equivalent experience running a large volunteer or hobby community.
  • Hands on moderation experience with Discord and with Steam community hubs, including handling a bad day in public.
  • Clear, plain written English. You will be writing patch notes that thousands of people read, so we will ask for samples.
  • Comfort working directly with developers, in the same channels, without a layer of management in between.
  • Availability to overlap with US Mountain Time between 10:00 and 15:00 at least three days per week.
  • Able to work as an independent contractor in the United States and to complete a W-9.
  • Your own computer and internet connection capable of running and capturing both games.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with the genre: Space Engineers, EVE Online, Starsector, Factorio, Astroneer and their communities.
  • Steamworks backend experience: announcements, store events, Next Fest and playtest setup.
  • Basic image editing for social cards and store capsules.
  • Short form video capture and editing for clips and trailers.
  • Experience running closed betas or public playtests, including key distribution and NDA handling.
  • Light HTML or BBCode for posting to our own forum and site.
  • Experience building and running a volunteer moderator team.
  • A second language, especially German, Russian or Brazilian Portuguese, which are where a lot of our players are.
